Subject: The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition

For Immediate Release:

Julian Monroe Fisher F.R.G.S., the Expedition Leader for The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition, just completed high altitude glacier training on the Hintertuxer Glacier in the Zillertal Region of Tirol in the Austrian Alps. Under the guidance of renown Austrian mountaineer Andreas Bucher, Fisher trained the required techniques of climbing and traversing the glaciers as well as self arrest and extricating oneself for a crevasse. The training was intended to prepare Fisher to lead The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition when the team will attempt to summit Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley which at 5109 meters is the highest peak in the Africa’s Rwenzori Mountains. The Rwenzoir Mountains, the fabled ‘Mountains of the Moon’, are located on the remote border between the African nation of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the nation of Uganda.

The objective of the expedition is to document the impact of climate change on the Rwenzori glaciers and the people that live within their shadows. The glaciers are predicted to disappear within twenty years. The expedition will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of  The Uganda-Congo Boundary Commission Expedition of 1907-08’. The actual geographic border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo was calculated by the 1907-08 expeditionary commission.
