Subject: The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition

Forty days remain before the departure of The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley
Expedition from the village of Gars am Kamp, Austria for the African
nation of Uganda. Expedition Leader Julian Monroe Fisher F.R.G.S.
announced today that he has received Flag # 89 from The Explorers Club
in New York City, New York, to carry to Central Africa in July 2008.
Quoting Matt Williams, Member Services Director for The Explorers
Club, “The Explorers Club flag represents an impressive history of
courage and accomplishment and has been carried by many noted members
on their expeditions. It is both an honor and a privilege to receive
this recognition.” Flag # 89 has previously been carried on six
expeditions since 1939. This will be the second time in as many years
that Fisher will lead an expedition carrying the flag.

The SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition team will trek into the remote
Rwenzori Mountain Range, the fabled ‘Mountains of the Moon’, located on
the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the country
of Uganda. Their objectives are to document the impact of climate
change on the Rwenzori glaciers and the people that live within their
shadows. The glaciers are predicted to disappear within twenty years.

The expedition will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of ‘The
Uganda-Congo Boundary Commission Expedition of 1907-08’. The actual
geographic border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo
was calculated by the 1907-08 expeditionary commission. However, they
only estimated the source of the River Lamya. The SOLIO 2008 Mount
Stanley Expedition will be the first to mark the actual source of the
River Lamya.

>From the Rwenzori glaciers, the team will trek down water flows until
they reach the source of the Lamya River. They will follow the Lamya
River to the Semliki River and  then follow the Semliki River to Lake
Albert and on to Murchison Falls where the Victoria Nile converges with
the water flows that form the Albert Nile River.
